French Onion Meatloaf with Melted Swiss Cheese

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Description

French Onion Meatloaf with Melted Swiss Cheese is a delicious twist on the classic comfort food, combining the rich flavors of caramelized onions and gooey Swiss cheese. This recipe transforms traditional meatloaf into a gourmet dish that’s perfect for family dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped and caramelized
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Start by caramelizing the onions. Heat a skillet over medium heat, add a tablespoon of butter, and cook the onions until golden brown and sweet, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well, then fold in half of the caramelized onions and half of the Swiss cheese.
  3. Transfer the mixture to a greased loaf pan or shape it into a loaf on a baking sheet. Top with the remaining caramelized onions and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  4. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45-50 minutes. Remove from the oven, sprinkle the remaining Swiss cheese on top, and return to the oven for 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey or chicken.
  • Gruyère cheese can be used instead of Swiss for a deeper flavor.
